BMW and The European Tour celebrate a special anniversary.

The past and present of both BMW and The European Tour was celebrated in an historic gathering at Wentworth Club today.

The famous Surrey course will play host to the BMW PGA Championship – the Tour’s flagship event – next month from May 24-27, but it was the 40th anniversary of both organisations which was honoured before a special golf challenge match over the West Course between representatives from BMW, The European Tour, Wentworth Club, BBC Television and Sky Sports.

BMW Owners Club

On Thursday April 12, 1972, the first round of official European Tour competition began – in the Spanish Open at Pals Golf Club in Girona – a tournament won four days later by the host nation’s Antonio Garrido. Following on from that, a month later – May 1972 – saw the establishment of BMW M GmbH, one of whose first models was the iconic M1.

To recognise both occasions, John Jacobs OBE, the founding father of The European Tour and the Tour’s first Director General in 1972, was joined by the Tour’s current Chief Executive George O’Grady CBE and professionals Sam Torrance OBE and Michael King, who both played in the early years of the Tour, for a commemorative photograph around an original gleaming red BMW M1 parked outside the Wentworth Clubhouse.

“This is a very special occasion and I can’t quite believe it is 40 years ago this week that The European Tour began – time does fly, doesn’t it,” said the now 86 year old Jacobs who aside from being instrumental in the birth of the Tour, is also recognised worldwide as one of the game’s great coaches.

Jacobs was at the helm for three years until handing over the reins to Ken Schofield CBE on January 1 1975. The Scot guided the Tour for 30 years before stepping aside for O’Grady on January 1 2005, and Jacobs paid a glowing tribute to his two successors.

“I moved aside because I wanted to get on with my own career but Ken was a natural and I knew the whole business was in safe hands,” he said. “If you look at where the Tour started when Ken took over and where it was when he left, it is almost unbelievable, and George has followed that on by moving things even further forward. Great credit must go to both of them.”

One of the players who benefitted from Jacobs’ foresight in the early years was Torrance who finished 37th on the 1972 Order of Merit before going on to record 21 European Tour victories in a glittering career which, to this day, sees the 58 year old Scot still hold the record for most European Tour events played with 706.

“I am very honoured to have been a European Tour professional for 40 years and very proud to be here today to help celebrate this unique anniversary,” said Torrance who now plies his trade on the European Seniors Tour where, on three occasions, he has claimed the Order of Merit trophy which bears John Jacobs’ name.

“I am delighted that The Children’s Trust is the Official Charity of the BMW PGA Championship this year and even happier to play an active role through the Caddie Experience competition.

“It is a charity very close to my heart, and I am glad to be involved at Wentworth in May. I really hope that the winner of the competition will have a top class experience with my caddie, Adam, and me ‘Inside the Ropes’, where you can see the action at close quarters.

“I can guarantee that the competition winner will have a great time and he or she can get the inside knowledge about how I prepare for a tournament as important as the BMW PGA Championship and how Adam goes about his preparation before a round.

“The winner can carry my professional golf bag – no easy task! – and we will discuss yardages, where to stand, what to do and make sure the clubs are all cleaned and so on. We are there to make the experience as enjoyable as possible and to give the best possible insight into the preparation which goes into the job.

Used cars over the UK

Second hand car prices vary significantly depending on where in the UK they are located. So significant is the variation that many people are willing to travel long distances in order to secure a good bargain. Naturally if you are intending to do this you will need to do a lot of homework first. The last thing you will want to do is to travel from say London to the north of Scotland only to find that the car you travelled so far to view is a disappointment, however do your homework first and you could secure a bargain.

To underline how worthwhile this can be, quite a number of car dealers based in London and the South East regularly visit car auctions in Glasgow to source cars to sell that would be far more expensive if bought from auctions closer to hand. You can find these by looking at Motors.co.uk in London.

To a large extent you can view these price variations as something like a north south divide. Certainly cars in Scotland and the North East can be between 10% and 20% cheaper than the same models in the similar condition sourced in the South. Wales is also a region where you will find significantly cheaper used cars. Interestingly the prices of used cars in Devon and Cornwall are not as cheap as you might expect; in fact they can be more expensive.

Regional variations become quite complicated when you look at specific types of car. For instance the regional variations in the prices of smaller cars do not necessarily follow the same pattern as those of executive saloons and 4x4s, which presumably is due to certain styles of used car being more popular in certain parts of the UK.

If you are prepared to do some online research in order to find a bargain located in some faraway place, and you are prepared to travel there by bus, train or plane (or all three of them) and to drive the long distance back to home, you can save yourself several thousand pounds.

Donald relishing return to the scene of his ‘Crowning Glory’

Luke Donald is relishing the prospect of returning to the scene of his coronation as World Number One seven months ago when he defends his BMW PGA Championship title at Wentworth Club, Surrey, England, from May 24-27.

The Englishman will line up against the best players in the world in his bid to retain the title he claimed in such dramatic circumstances last year, when he beat his compatriot and then-World Number One Lee Westwood in a play-off after the pair finished level in regulation play on six under par.

BMW Owners Club

Donald has since spent 32 weeks atop the Official World Golf Ranking, winning The Race to Dubai and the US PGA Tour money list along the way – the first time anyone has headed the rankings in Europe and the USA in the same year.
On top of that, the 35 year old also claimed The European Tour Golfer of the Year Award, the US PGA Tour Player of the Year, the US PGA’s Byron Nelson Award for best stroke average and the PGA of America Player of the Year.

Understandably, Donald is eager to return to where his period of world domination began, only 40 minutes away from where he grew up in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire.

“It was probably the highlight of my year,” he said. “Going head to head with Lee, who was World Number One at the time, winning the flagship event of The European Tour, at Wentworth, and having family and friends watching as well was something special.

“It was an amazing victory for me; it is one step down from winning a Major. There was a lot at stake. I don’t think in the championship’s history there have been too many times when not only are you fighting for the trophy, you’re fighting for the World Number One position.
“There were so many different emotions and to share that with family and friends meant a lot. I’m looking forward to returning. I narrowly lost two years ago so to get the win last time was great and I cannot wait to get back and defend the title this year.”

The championship has produced some superb champions since Ken Bousfield won the inaugural tournament in 1955, with Seve Ballesteros (1991), Sir Nick Faldo (1978, 1980, 1981 and 1989) Bernhard Langer (1987, 1993 and 1995), Colin Montgomerie (1998, 1999 and 2000) Arnold Palmer (1975) and Ian Woosnam (1988 and 1997) all having inscribed their name on the famous trophy.
Advance tickets for The European Tour’s flagship tournament are currently available at discounted prices, with Adult Season Passes just £60, Weekend Passes £45 and One Day tickets £30.

Sunday Grandstand tickets are already sold out while Clubhouse Hospitality Passes are also booking quickly, with just a few tables left, so reserve now to avoid disappointment.

WhatCar? Car of the Year Award 2012 Winner.

The new BMW 3 Series Saloon has lived up to the legacy of its predecessor having been crowned WhatCar? ‘Best Compact Executive Car’ 2012, for the seventh consecutive year with the 320d SE.

The BMW 3 Series Saloon reigned supreme in the Compact Executive category, recognised for remaining ahead of the competition in every way.  With its EfficientDynamics package making this ‘3’ the most economical car in its class it appeals to both business and retail customers.   However, it was not just the BMW 3 Series’ outstanding economy that stood out for the judges; it was commended for being smooth and refined whilst still offering that sheer driving pleasure.

Chas Hallett, WhatCar? editor-in-chief, said: “The new BMW 3 Series is great to drive, with sharp steering and a well judged chassis.  But the biggest gains are in efficiency; it delivers 60mpg and CO2 emissions so low that it falls into the cheapest 13 per cent company car tax band for diesels.  It’s a convincing winner of our Executive Car of the Year award.”

Tim Abbott, Managing Director of BMW UK, said: “It is a testament to the quality and refinement of the BMW 3 Series to win this prestigious award for seven consecutive years.  To have this consistent recognition, across the generations, for all of the hard work that goes into producing BMW’s core model is a great honour.”

Continuing the success of the ‘3’, the BMW X3 took home the accolade of WhatCar? ‘Best SUV’ 2012 having fought off stiff opposition in a very competitive sector.  The BMW X3 xDrive20d was awarded the top honour in recognition of its exceptional blend of efficiency, practicality and quality.  While CO2 emissions of just 147g/km and a combined consumption of 50.4mpg ensure that running costs are kept to a minimum.

Chas Hallett, WhatCar? editor-in-chief, said: “There’s more competition than ever among SUVs, but the BMW X3 wins the category award by offering lots of space, excellent fuel efficiency and a beautifully finished cabin.  It’s a great family car, really – and its running costs are around those of a regular hatchback.”

BMW also received awards in the following categories:

Estate over 25k: BMW 520d Touring SE
Coupe over £40k: BMW 640d M Sport
SUV between £30-40k: BMW X3 xDrive20d SE (Overall Winner)
